For the giraffe bread, first boil milk with vanilla sugar, starch and salt in a pot and let it thicken. Stir in the butter in pieces. Allow to cool.

Mix yeast with flour and sugar. Knead with the milk mixture to form a smooth dough.

Divide this dough in half. Divide one half in half again. Knead the cocoa powder into one of the small pieces of dough. With the second small piece of dough, knead in the poppy seeds. Then let the whole dough rise for about 1 1/2 hours.

Grease a loaf pan.

Divide the large and the two small pieces of dough into 7 pieces each and form each piece of dough into a roll. Roll out the poppy seed dough rolls lengthwise and place each around a cocoa dough roll. Then roll out the light dough rolls and again wrap them around the other rolls. Place the rolls unevenly in the loaf pan to make a giraffe pattern later. Let the dough rise in the pan to twice its size.

In the meantime, preheat the oven to 160 °C hot air.

Brush the dough with milk and bake the giraffe bread for about 40 minutes.
