A simple but delicious cake recipe:

Cream sugar, butter, eggs and lemon zest with a mixer, fold in flour and baking powder. Grease an oblong loaf pan (about 22 cm long) well, dust with flour.

Pour in the batter, smooth, sprinkle with candied lemon peel, bake.

After 20 min. baking time sprinkle the cake with 1 tbsp. sugar. Madeira cake is served with afternoon tea. Its name is explained by the tradition of bringing it to the table with a glass of Madeira.
