Preheat the oven to 200 °C. Butter the muffin cups or line with parchment paper or suitable paper cups. Sift the baking soda, flour, baking powder and salt into a large baking bowl. In a second baking bowl, beat the egg and brown sugar with an electric mixer. Fold in the buttermilk, melted butter and orange juice.

Grate the orange peel, do not grate the white skin under the peel, it tastes bitter. Peel the orange, cut it into segments and remove all skins, cut the flesh into 6 mm pieces. Add to the egg and sugar mixture together with the dates.

Quickly stir the liquid ingredients into the flour mixture, taking care not to form lumps. Fill the batter into the prepared muffin cups, leaving the top quarter of the cups free.

Mix sugar and cinnamon and sprinkle evenly over muffins. Bake the muffins for 15 minutes. Pierce them with a wooden stick to check if they are cooked. If no dough sticks to them, they can be removed from the oven.
