A simple but delicious cake recipe:

Pour the sweet cider or Marsala over the fig pieces and let them steep for a few hours. Mix the fruit and nuts together. Melt the butter in a water bath. Beat the eggs with the sugar until creamy. Add the fruit and nuts alternately with the butter. Mix the flour with the vanilla sugar and baking powder and sift over the batter.

Mix the saffron with the water. Add it as well. Then mix everything together to form a sticky dough.

Grease a cake tin (20 cm ø) and sprinkle with breadcrumbs. Pour the dough into it and smooth it out with a damp spatula. Brush with water and bake in the oven heated to 200 °C for 1 hour, covering with parchment paper if necessary.
